Open Sumerian

Screenwriting software made in Italy

Your screenplay, formatted properly. From the first line.

Write in standard American format without worrying about margins. Sumerian formats the page by the rules of the trade, saves every line as you type, even offline, and lets you bring your files anywhere.

No card required. Write in your browser, nothing to install.

INT. MUSEUM STORAGE ROOM – NIGHT
Shelves up to the ceiling. A desk lamp. IRENE (40), cotton
gloves, catalogues clay tablets one by one.
IRENE
(to herself)
This one isn’t in the inventory.
She turns the tablet over. On the back, a sign engraved
recently.
BRUNO (V.O.)
Irene? We close in ten minutes.
Leave that stuff, restoration will
deal with it tomorrow.
CUT TO:

Exact pagination

Courier 12, 55 lines per page, (MORE) and (CONT’D) where they belong. A4 or Letter, the page count does not change: one page still takes about a minute.

Write, don’t format

Enter and Tab move from scene to character to dialogue. INT. becomes a scene heading on its own, and character names complete as you type them.

Never lose a line

Every change stays on your device and reaches the server as soon as there is a connection. Named revisions with colours, a safety copy every day, restore in one click.

Your files stay yours

Import from Final Draft, Fountain, PDF and Word directly in the browser: the original file is not uploaded anywhere.

The American format, no interpretations

Sumerian’s layout engine works in lines and columns, like a typewriter. The same calculation draws the pages on screen and the PDF: what you see is what you print.

  • A heading never left alone at the bottom of a page; a character never separated from their line
  • Dialogue split only at the end of a sentence, with (MORE) and NAME (CONT’D)
  • Dual dialogue, scene numbers, title page
  • English or Italian terms, chosen for each project

Saving

Like an online document. But offline too.

Close the tab, lose the Wi-Fi on a train, reopen the laptop a week later: the screenplay is where you left it. Sumerian merges changes without conflicts and always tells you, in plain words, when everything is saved.

Board and characters

Before you write, build the story.

A free board for cards, notes and links, with the templates you know: the hero’s journey, three acts, Save the Cat. Link a card to a scene and they stay linked: move the cards, and the screenplay reorders.

Every character has a sheet, with goal, need, wound and arc, and all their lines in one place: you see at once whether their voice holds from start to finish.

Sharing

Send it to the producer. No attachments.

Create a link, choose how many days it lasts and, if you want, a password. Whoever receives it reads the formatted screenplay, on a phone or a computer, with no account and no way to download it. Revoke it whenever you like.

  • Valid up to 90 days
  • Optional password
  • See how many times it was opened
  • Instant revoke

Write alone, or with the whole production

A shared workspace keeps a production’s screenplays together: writers, director and producer work on the same projects, and the changes merge on their own.

Questions

How much does it cost?

€4.99 a month or €39.99 a year, VAT included. If the subscription ends, your screenplays stay readable and you can always download them as Fountain.

Can I open a screenplay written in Final Draft or Celtx?

Yes. From Final Draft, import the .fdx file. From Celtx, WriterDuet, Highland or Fade In, export to Fountain or PDF and import it: Sumerian recognises the elements and lets you check the doubtful ones before creating the project.

Does it work without internet?

Once a project is open, yes: you keep writing and everything is saved on your device. When the connection comes back, the changes reach the server.

A4 or US Letter?

Both. Changing the paper does not change the number of lines, so the page count, and the estimated running time, stays the same.

Can I write in Italian with the American format?

Yes: each project has its own language. In Italian Sumerian uses INT./EST., STACCO SU:, (SEGUE) and (CONT.); in English it uses INT./EXT., CUT TO:, (MORE) and (CONT’D).

Can I let someone read the screenplay without an account?

Yes, with a read-only link: choose how many days it lasts and, if you want, a password. Whoever opens it reads the formatted pages but cannot download them.
